INTRODUCTION TO ASLS

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the
leading cause of disability in the U.S.

Emergency treatments to limit the risk of disability
are available but underutilized.

A practical stroke patient assessment tool suitable for
routine use by EMS personnel & nurses is needed.

PRACTICAL, HANDS-ON, 8-HOUR COURSE

  • In 1997, the UM CRME developed a hands-on, how-to course for health professionals:
    • developed by experts in stroke, emergency medicine, prehospital care, nursing, education
    • updated and improved continuously
    • used to train thousands of EMS personnel, nurses, and physicians from over 100 institutions across the U.S.
    • provides a unique neurologic assessment tool ideal for both prehospital and hospital use
    • approved by the Florida Bureau of EMS
    • consistent with JCAHO stroke center criteria.
